Raised  at Fort Devens, MA in September, 1965 the Brigade was deployed to Vietnam and stationed in the III Corps Tactical Zone.  It participated in  Operation Attleboro in War Zone C in the western portion of Tay Ninh Province where it uncovered a  large enemy base camp in October, 1966.  It also participated in Operation Junction City.
In April of 1967 the Brigade formed part of Task Force Oregon and moved to I Corps Tactical Zone in the north of South Vietnam.  Along with the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division and the 3rd Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division it formed what later was reorganized into the 23d Infantry Division, Americal Division, on 25 September 1967.
It’s area of operation was I Corps, in northern Vietnam.  After the Americal Division was redeployed out of Vietnam in November, 1971, the 196th Light Infantry Brigade became a separate brigade-sized element to safeguard its area of operations.
The Brigade was relocated to Da Nang for security duties in April, 1971.
The 196th Light Infantry Brigade departed Vietnam as the part of Operation Keystone Pheasant in the spring of 1972.
