The division was activated at Fort Benning, GA and major elements arrived in North Africa in December 1942. It attacked through Sicily and seeing conbat at Licata, Gela, Campobell and Palermo. From Sicily the division moved to England to make ready for the invasion of Normandy.
It landed at Normandy on 9 Jun and and on 29 Jul too ST. Denis-le-Gast and participated in the German counterattack at Avranches and later captured Domfort, France.
By November 1944 the division fought through to the Roer River having fought Germans at Dreux, France, Valkenburg, Marienburg, Baeswiler, Odtweiler, Aachen, Puffendorf and Mrzenhausen, Germany
The Division crossed the Rhine River at Verdingen and drove across Germany to the Elbe River by 11 April, 1945. and assaulted Magdeburg with the 30th Infantry Division.
