Antique D.B. Akard Self-Opening Front Door Opener / Closer Pat 1897 Plate RareDescription
A popular feature of late 19th-century Victorian homes (that no longer had servants) was a front door opening system - with a lever at the top of the stairs that, when pulled, opened the front door. The bellcrank levers, as they were formally called, were connected with a long wire to a mechanism that opened the door. The system was patented in 1897 by A.B. Akard, and produced in his shop in the Mission district of San Francisco.
This antique plate has its maker's name and patent date and is cast iron with a bronze finish. It measures 8" wide and 3 7/8" tall. Note that one screw hole is broken. We thought we'd seen it all.
